“In the absence of clearly-defined goals, we become strangely loyal to
performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.”
-- Robert Heinlein

Are you clearly aware of your top priorities?
Do you waste time on matters of secondary or little importance while avoiding more essential tasks?
Planning, conducting, and writing up research stirs up anxiety. We are, by definition, facing unknown territory and we are naturally uncomfortable with challenges that are new and incompletely understood.
As humans, our instinct is to avoid anxiety and seek safety. So instead of working on research and writing, we seek distractions.
Thus procrastination is a natural tendency that often occurs at a semi-conscious level.
Because of our understandable pull to avoid anxiety, we must be on guard to keep our priorities in the forefront of our mind. Avoiding distractions is an ongoing process of vigilance.
This week try to avoid daily trivia, set clearly-defined goals, and begin each period of work with your top-priority task.
(This week my top work goal is revamping my web site. I'll let you know when it is complete.)
